Welcome to my 12 Season Color Theory series, which aims to break down the best and worst colors for your “color season,” or what we call your unique blend of hair and eye color, skin tone, and contrast.
My suggestions will hopefully be a rough guideline for what colors might work best for you, but they are by no means hard and fast rules. Even if they were rules, if there’s one thing we know about fashion, it’s that rules were made to be broken on occasion! Besides, there are so many variations of colors (not to mention variations in people!) that there are bound to be exceptions or close calls. Nonetheless, I hope you find these posts helpful in determining the best colors for you to wear to bring out your natural beauty.
The Autumn color season might be the easiest one to picture: you are likely someone with warm or golden undertones who looks great in the traditional fall colors. Imagine the deep green of the forest, purple of the sunset, and reds and yellows of the turning leaves.
Hair and Eye Color
- You are likely to have medium brown hair or darker. If you are blonde, you are likely a darker honey blonde.
- Your eyes are hazel, green, or brown (as you may have predicted).
The Three Autumn Types
Within the Autumn category, there are three further subcategories of Autumn types. I’ve written a post on each of these types and created an easy shopping guide so you can find the colors to get (and the colors to avoid) for your color season.
-
Soft Autumn
(click the link to find your personalized post): Think muted, neutral, medium. You are likely to have honey-colored blonde or medium-colored brown hair, with hazel, light brown, or blue eyes. You look good in beige, cream, and neutrals with a warmer tone (light tan, camel) and you might prefer gold jewelry over silver. I always think of Drew Barrymore or Gisele in this category.
-
Warm Autumn
(click the link to find your personalized post): You are a truly golden type who likely to have auburn- to dark-brown or even red-brown hair. You possess very warm undertones and green or brown eyes. Colors like terracotta, brick, and deep green really bring out your glow. Think of J.Lo, Julia Roberts, and Priyanka Chopra.
-
Deep Autumn
(click the link to find your personalized post): Like the name suggests, you have warm undertones but deeper-colored features (dark brown eyes; olive to dark brown skin). And you can get away with wearing deeper shades of autumn colors that might overwhelm your Soft Autumn sisters.
- My melaninated friends often immediately put themselves into this category, which can be true, although it’s worth noting that many of my Asian and South Asian friends are actually Warm or Soft Autumns and just don’t know it. For instance, while Mindy Kaling is arguably a Deep Autumn, so is Jessica Alba and Sandra Bullock.
- Take a look at my Deep Winter post — since you are also in the Deep category, you share some of the same colors, such as the warmer red, and greens.
