Can a road be famous? Turns out, very much yes: in fact, Smuggler’s Notch, a short stretch of the two-lane road that winds away from Stowe and into the nearby mountains (Route 108), is perhaps the most picturesque path I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting.
(Note, confusingly, there is an actual Smuggler’s Notch park near the peak of the road that is also nicknamed Smuggler’s Notch, so if you are navigating there using Apple or Google Maps, note that the whole road is quite scenic and not just the top.)

For one, the beautiful foliage sights begin even before you get formally get on Smuggler’s Notch. As you drive away from Stowe, you might see cars pulled over on the side of the road randomly. Turns out that it’s far from random – there is a wide open field on the right side of the road that opens up in a wide expanse of dappled trees. Sometimes the road more traveled is actually the more desirable route!
You’ll find a perfect opportunity for a middle-of-the-road picture like the above near the parking lots for Stowe Mountain Resort. It’s a bit difficult – not to mention dangerous – to stop on the narrow road to admire the foliage or take pictures, and I did not feel comfortable pulling over on the narrow shoulders, but this parking lot allows you to get out and take some time to admire the road that stretches upward into the mountains. In addition, the yield signs nearby slow down the passing cars just long enough for you to dash across the road. Happy driving!
