This post is part of my 12 Season Color Theory series, which aims to break down the best and worst colors for your “color season,” or what we call your unique blend of hair and eye color, skin tone, and contrast. There are 4 overall seasons (spring, summer, etc), and 3 subcategories within those seasons (one of which is featured on this page!) You might want to start here if you are new to this series. If you think you are another subcategory under the Autumn type, you can find all 3 of the Autumn types discussed here.
If you get into color theory, you’ll find out that the reason for categorizing this sub-type as Deep Autumn is, well, the fact that their traits and best colors are all bolder and more saturated. That’s not to say that Deep Autumns are limited to deep, moody colors. Instead, they really stand out in the richest and most contrasted versions of any warm shade.
Note: My melaninated friends often immediately put themselves into this sub-category, which can be accurate, although it’s worth noting that many of my Asian and South Asian friends are actually Warm or Soft Autumns and just don’t know it. For instance, while Mindy Kaling is arguably a Deep Autumn, so is Jessica Alba and Sandra Bullock.
Take a look at my Deep Winter post — since you are also in the Deep category, you share some of the same colors, such as the warmer red, and greens. Meanwhile, the Deep Winters of the world really shine in the most saturated cool-toned colors.
Hair and Eye Color
- You have warm undertones but deeper-colored features (dark brown eyes; olive to dark brown skin). And you can get away with wearing deeper shades of autumn colors that might overwhelm your Soft Autumn sisters.
- Your eyes are dark brown or black (as you may have predicted).
Best Colors for Deep Autumn Types
Take any autumnal shade and take it to the max. That’s how I think about Deep Autumns — choose cranberry, forest-y greens, eggplant purple, and vivid pinks. Icy pastel shades will wash you out, however, and I’d stay away from light seafoam-y blue in particular.
Here are some of my top picks to help you bring out your deep tones.
